Market capitalization

Market capitalization

Industry folks and CNBC commentators call it "market cap", perhaps because it sounds better or they don't have time to finish the word "capitalization". Market capitalization is the total market value of a company's outstanding stocks. Companies are ranked from large cap (S&P 500) to small cap (Russell 2000 index). Definitions vary as markets move. Anything smaller than $1 billion is normally regarded as small cap.
